It looked perfect in your editor. You upload it, open the link, and your crisp footage has turned to mush. Blurry uploads are one of the most common complaints in video sharing, and almost every case traces back to one of five causes. Here is how to diagnose which one bit you, and what to do about it.

Cause 1: You uploaded an already-compressed file

Every compression step loses quality, and losses multiply. The classic chain: your editor exports at decent quality, your chat app compresses it when you send it to yourself or a colleague, you download that copy and upload it to a platform, which then compresses it again for streaming. Three lossy passes on footage designed for one.

The fix: always upload from your original export, never from a file that passed through a messenger. If you move files between devices, use a transfer service or drive sync that does not re-encode, not a chat app.

Cause 2: The platform re-encoded at a low bitrate

Platforms transcode every upload into their streaming renditions. How aggressive that encoding is varies enormously. Check the player's reported resolution

Match it against your export resolution to catch upscaling or capping.

Watch during motion

Consistent blur points to bitrate; blur only during action points to content complexity; blur only at startup points to the player warming up.

The habits that prevent it entirely

Upload originals at high bitrate, in the resolution you want watched, straight from your editor, to platforms with modern transcoding. Avoid messenger-relayed files. Keep masters of everything.
